28 May 09 fxphd – dct101 – Digital Color Theory

fxphd – dct101 – Digital Color Theory | 500 MB

Digital Colour Theory introduces you to the fundamentals of light and colour when applied to film and television industries. Understanding how to make your images look as photorealistic as possible is the premise for this course. Standard theories of additive and subtractive colour models will be discussed with examples from various media and software packages such as Final Cut Pro and Photoshop.
Learn what colour enhancement is all about and why you would use it. You’ll learn that using different colour correction packages are made easier when you understand the colour theory behind what you want to achieve. This class will cover film and video theory, in particular how colour is used creatively as well as technically. This is a great companion course at fxphd to use with courses on the inner workings of Davinci and Lustre.
Have some fun with light and colour, you’ll be amazed when you see what you can achieve.

Class 5: Exploring 3D multipass rendering, and how to use them in After Effects. First a brief explanation of the types of passes that can be output from most 3D applications. Then a look at some real world examples. Finally a look at using 3D passes with Trapcode Form and Particular
Class 6: Part 1 of 2. In this class we will build a 5 second bumper/ promo for a TV show. We’ll track some camera motion to add a handheld feel to the AE camera. Then we’ll take this and animate some moves in 3D, adding in copy and some extra elements
Class 7: Part 2 of 2. In this class we finish building a 5 second bumper/ promo for a TV show
Class 8: Part 1 of 3. We will look at some methods of using 3D renders and exported data in our After Effects comps. Taking multipass renders and enhancing them. Using the camera data from the 3D application to match our AE 3D layers to the 3D render. Also, pasting multiple paths into shape layers, animating shape layers and adding effects
Class 9: Part 2 of 3. In this class we continue building the project we started last week. We look at using mattes combined with continually rasterising layers and shape layers to draw on a logo

Matt Leonard leads our Fusion course at fxphd. His sphereVFX company has been doing Fusion training for years, including creating an intermediate level DVD for the app. Leonard has worked in the animation and visual effects industry for over sixteen years producing state-of-the-art work for feature films, broadcast and commercials in the UK and US markets.. He has set up and run animation divisions in five companies, overseen animators and compositors, worked as a CG Supervisor on various projects and has overseen live-action shoots.

Class 1: UI Overview and Understanding the Workflow of Fusion
This class covers the user interface, building the first simple composite and help to build an understanding of how Fusion deals with footage, channels, masks and nodes (colour correction, blurs, etc).

Class 2: Creators and Images Manipulation
This class covers the main nodes used to create backgrounds, gradients and fractals. Alongside these creators we also cover the transformation nodes such as Scale, Crop and DVE. Finally we will look at some of the warping tools such as Displace, Corner Positioned and Grid Wrap.

Class 3: Colour Correction and Additional Colour Channels
This class will focus mainly on colour correction inside of Fusion. We will also be covering the use of addition channels such as z-depth, normals, UV, motion vectors, etc.

Class 4: Effects and Filters
This class will look at various effects and filters which ship with Fusion and how best to use them in a production environment. Included will be the blurs, sharpens, camera effects, and custom filters.

Class 5: Masks, Mattes and Keying
This class will focus on the four main keys inside Fusion (Chroma, Luma, Difference and Ultra). We will be covering matte manipulation and gaining an understanding of premultiplied alpha and how it affects our compositing. Well also be looking at Masks including double-poly lines and spline animation.

Class 6: Tracking, Stabilisation and Corner Pinning
This class will look in-depth at the Tracker in Fusion which covers multi point tracking, stabilisations, corner pinning and perspective positioning.

Class 7: Paint, Wire Removal and Time Wrapping
This class will cover the multi faceted Paint tool inside of Fusion. We will look at retouch, cloning and wire removal. Also in this class we will cover the time manipulation nodes.

Class 8: Getting to Grips with 3D in Fusion
This first class covering the 3D aspect of Fusion will focus mainly on the UI and controls. We will be building a basic 3D composite and looking at the key nodes for build a 3D system, including Camera, Merge, Render, Image Plane and some Lights.

Class 9: A Greater Understanding of 3D in Fusion
This second class will be covering some of the more advanced aspects of 3D inside of Fusion. We will look at importing animation data for use with camera and geometry, camera projectors, point cloud data, displacement nodes, fbx and look more at lighting.

Class 10: A First Look at Particles
This class will be a basic introduction into Fusions powerful particle generator. We will cover the main Particle Emitter and both 2D and 3D Rendering. We will also look at how fields and forces control and manipulate the particles once emitted and how to build basic systems such as fire and rain.

19 Feb 09 FXPHD AFX301 Guerrilla Filmmakers Guide To After Effects

FXPHD AFX301 Guerrilla Filmmakers Guide To After Effects | 4.5 GB

Edward’s course will begin by breaking down shots, techniques, and workflow used in the actual production of Atilla the Hun. This in-depth coverage of the real world project will then shift gears into producing a complex visual effects shot with footage shot specifically for the course. Members will recreate the techniques used in one of the signature shots of the project — that of 30,000 Huns storming across an open field in an aerial shot.

Professor: Gareth Edwards (GarethEdwards)

Class 1: An introduction to the course workflow, using the Adobe suite, Premiere and Excel. Initial set up for an effects shot in After Effects. Tracking in AE using nulls for multiple track points and exporting a time-remapped frame for a clean background plate in Photoshop. Illustrating the power of the Adobe suite in creating a quick proof of concept.

Class 2: Creating a matte painting. Follows a breakdown from initial sketch to importation of photographic elements and eventual rendering into a completed matte. Multiple examples using pre-rendered 3D and ways to add realistic details with photos and video to nest them further into a realistic matte.

Class 3: Tricks within After Effects focused on crowd duplication recycling elements to create variation. Tips for rotoscoping quickly, and using other programs such as Mocha and Boujou. Faking 3D space with a 2D image in After Effects using created or imported layers.

Class 4: Issues with parallax when creating drag and drop armies. Keying tips. Using a plug-in for 3DSmax to export camera data directly into After Effects.

Class 5: The “poor man’s” Massive shot. Detailed example into using particle systems to animate huge crowds using avatar loops and tracking with multiple layers in both 3D and After Effects.

Class 6: Creation of another massive crowd charge, but using primarily After Effects instead of 3D particle clouds. 3D tracking in Boujou to provide tracking for a helicopter pass. Step by step process of constructing a proof of concept trial for the scene with provided footage.

Class 7: Making changes to the previs shot before committing to a finalized look. Randomizing the group of tourists further with additional avatars.

Class 8: A trick for grouping layers to simplify randomizing of avatars. Preparation of individual avatar passes for final composite.

Class 9: Additional passes are added to the composition to add further effects and grounding, including dust, bush intersection, color correction, light grading and glints.

Class 10: Reconsidering aspects of the shot for possible correction or tweaks. Correcting shadows and motion blur. Further example of a “poor man’s” Massive with a different background plate, and class conclusion.
